Price and availability
Sony's WH-1000XM6 headphones hit the shelves in May this year at £399. The WH-1000XM5 can now be snapped up for just £279 -- a lot less than what they cost at launch in 2022.
Design and comfort
At first glance, you'd struggle to tell these noise-cancelling headphones apart. But the Sony WH-1000XM6 does have a few subtle yet nifty design upgrades. The biggest difference is the foldable design that returns from the XM4 era, with stainless-steel hinges that let the earcups swivel and collapse inward. The XM6 also has a wider headband and improved mic mesh for windy conditions.
Sound quality
Sony 1000X Series headphones have always delivered great audio quality. The XM6 brings upgraded drivers with perforations in their voice coil and a stiffer dome housing, resulting in richer vocals and increased clarity. A wider soundstage and improved D/A conversion via the new QN3 processor round out the improvements.
Noise cancellation
The XM6's QN3 processor is seven times faster than the XM5's chip and fine-tunes 12 mics (four more than the XM5) in real time. An Adaptive NC Optimiser constantly adjusts noise cancellation based on your environment and how the headphones fit on your head.
Other features
The XM6 uses AI-based beamforming for crystal-clear calls in windy conditions. It also features 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema, adding spatial audio processing to stereo films and shows.
Battery life and charging
Both models provide up to 30 hours with ANC on. New to the XM6 is the ability to top up the battery while streaming over Bluetooth -- so no downtime during recharges.
